Why do I want a run-bike?
As a two- or three-year old, you probably get bored walking around the park or to the shops, being dragged around by Mum or carried by Dad. How different things would be if you could whizz along at your own pace, go where you wanted, race ahead, chase the dog... Well, you can with FirstBIKE - you'll see the park in a whole new light. Mum will love it too, because you won't be whingeing all the time; Dad will be jealous because he'll want one of his own, but at least he'll be glad he doesn't have to carry you any more.

Why no pedals?
Why would you want pedals? You'll have plenty of fun scooting along, propelled by your feet. You'll soon learn to steer, balance and control your speed. Pedals just get in the way; you'll go faster without. Stabilisers? You simply won't need them. Ever.

How do I do it?
Start by standing astride the saddle with your feet on the ground. Hold the handlebars and just walk, or scoot. You will quickly learn to steer. Then you'll run, then you'll be able to lift your feet up and freewheel. To begin with you can control your speed with your feet on the ground, but as your experience and confidence grow (from around 3 years old), you'll need to start using the brake and you'll probably get told off for going too fast!

How old do I have to be?
You can start from around two, though some children can start even earlier (the STREET PU can be ridden by riders as small as 84cm with the lowering kit attached!). You'll be able to use the brake from around three (perhaps a bit earlier) and you'll probably move on to a pedal bike when you're five. But I bet you'll still play with your FirstBIKE well beyond then!

Is it scary?
No, it's just great fun! But you must wear proper shoes and a helmet - things don't always happen the way you'd expect. Your parents must always keep an eye on you.

Why FirstBIKE?
It's cool, it's comfy, it's sleek and fast, but it stops too (so less chance of accidents). And you can use it in any weather, even when it snows!FirstBIKE is the best: it's designed that way.

Do I need a brake?
To start with, no, but later, yes. Once you're confident using the bike, the brake will give you (and your parents) the reassurance that you can stop when you need to. Speed control through braking is an important cycle skill and the earlier it is learned the better.Specifically designed for use by small children, FirstBIKE's unique SAFETY STOP is the best way to learn to use a brake because of its smooth, progressive action. Naturally, the brake is on the rear wheel for safety.

Can I install a brake later?
Yes, but it's expensive because it requires a new wheel. It's better to buy a bike with a brake, even if the brake is not used to begin with. If necessary you can disconnect it, possibly also remove the lever (get an adult to help!). Then reconnect it when you're ready.

Can I put the brake lever on the other side?
Yes. Ask your dealer (they may charge a small fee). Or you can do it yourself (call us if you get stuck). It's not really necessary, though: you'll quickly learn the difference when you start to use a pedal bike.

Why is the steering restricted?
It's safer that way. Young children tend to steer where they're looking and don't always look where they're going. Also, obstacles can wrench the steering from your hands, resulting in unintended and rather abrupt dismounts. This is less likely to happen if the steering is restricted. Fewer incidents mean more confidence.

Can I upgrade from solid tyres?
Yes, the wheels take standard 12.5" diameter tyres and tubes. Ask your dealer, or contact us directly.

How long will FirstBIKE last?
Yonks. All the bikes are guaranteed for 2 years but with a little bit of care and attention, your FirstBIKE will last a good deal longer than that. You'll be able to pass it down to younger siblings, even younger generations.
